Analysis

Snapchat is the most interesting case study in audience-specific design. The interface is deliberately opaque to outsiders - gestures and navigation patterns are learned socially, not through onboarding. For its core audience, this is a feature, not a bug. The camera-first paradigm was genuinely innovative. Snap Map is one of the best location features in any social app. But Discover is a dumpster fire of clickbait, and the My AI integration is a privacy nightmare wearing a friendly face.

What earns the score

  • +Camera-first paradigm is genuinely novel
  • +Snap Map is an excellent social feature
  • +Streak mechanics drive retention (for better or worse)
  • +AR filters and lenses remain best-in-class

What holds it back

  • Intentional opacity alienates potential users
  • Discover tab is low-quality content farming
  • My AI integration raises privacy concerns
  • Navigation is learnable but not discoverable
