Twilio is the ultimate gap between API quality and dashboard quality. The APIs are beautifully documented and well-designed - developers love writing code against Twilio. The web console, however, is a labyrinth of navigation that seems designed to prevent you from finding anything. Phone number management is buried. Pricing is opaque. The Segment acquisition added another layer of confusion. Twilio proves you can be a great developer tool and a terrible product simultaneously.
What earns the score
- +API design and documentation are excellent
- +Reliability of communication infrastructure is top-tier
- +SDK ecosystem is comprehensive
What holds it back
- –Web console navigation is genuinely confusing
- –Pricing transparency is poor
- –Phone number management is buried in UI
- –Multiple product acquisitions create navigation chaos
- –Onboarding flow is overwhelming for new developers
