YouTube is a product that should score higher given its technical achievement - streaming billions of hours of video flawlessly is extraordinary. But the experience of using YouTube has steadily degraded. Ad frequency has increased to the point of hostility. Shorts was shoved into the feed despite user resistance. The recommendation algorithm creates filter bubbles that are genuinely concerning. The creator studio, however, is one of the best content management tools ever built.
What earns the score
- +Video player is technically excellent
- +Creator Studio is a best-in-class CMS
- +Search within video content actually works
- +Subscription management is well-organized
What holds it back
- –Ad frequency has become hostile to users
- –Shorts integration disrupts the browsing experience
- –Recommendation algorithm optimizes for engagement over quality
- –Comments section design enables toxicity
- –Premium upselling is aggressive
