Analysis

Coinbase's onboarding and initial purchase flow are clean. Buying your first crypto is straightforward. The experience degrades from there. The addition of DeFi features, NFTs, staking, and Coinbase Wallet has created a product that serves too many audiences without a coherent experience for any of them. The downward delta reflects recent UI changes that added complexity without solving existing navigation problems.

What earns the score

  • +Initial onboarding and first purchase are clean
  • +Security features are well-communicated
  • +Educational content is well-integrated

What holds it back

  • Product sprawl creating navigational confusion
  • Fee structure is opaque and inconsistent
  • Advanced and basic features uncomfortably coexist
