Analysis

Google Docs solved real-time collaboration before anyone else and then seemingly stopped innovating. The multiplayer editing experience remains genuinely magical - seeing cursors move in real time still delights first-time users. But the formatting tools haven't meaningfully evolved. The document canvas feels narrow and rigid compared to Notion or Coda. Comments and suggestions work well but the notification system around them is chaotic.

What earns the score

  • +Real-time collaboration is still the gold standard
  • +Sharing and permissions model is intuitive
  • +Comment and suggestion workflow is solid
  • +Offline mode actually works

What holds it back

  • Formatting and layout tools feel dated
  • Template gallery is mediocre
  • No meaningful innovation in the editing experience for years
  • Mobile editing is frustrating for anything complex
